3 Ways to Use Technological Innovation to Leverage Your Business in the Global Market

Ten years ago, I would not have brought up building a global market. It seemed so out-of-reach. Now, with technology and social media, innovation is at the forefront of society and growing your business globally has become a critical element to leveraging your business. In fact, PwC conducted a survey with CEOs in 2011 and found “80 percent of CEOs believed innovation drives efficiencies and leads to competitive advantage and technology is one way of capturing both.” In addition, 54 percent believed funding growth initiatives to leverage their businesses requires technology such as mobile devices and social media to build global markets. Using technology and social media, let’s explore three ways you can use innovation to leverage your business in the global market.

One way is to make sure all key employees, such as CEOs, CFOs, and CIOs have phones with international access. I realized the importance of international calling access when I was contacted by Rhobai Musimbi , Founder and CEO at Kakamega Women Telecentre Organization in Kenya, Africa in May 2015. She reached out to me via LinkedIn to garnish support for her community-based organization (CBO) for women and girls. As we struggled to connect using skype, etc., I realized not having international calling access was limiting my ability to build a relationship and establish a global partnership.

Another way is social media. Social media has connected me to people around the world. In 2012, LinkedIn helped me recruit speakers for our annual Females are FABULOUS Conference, where we recognize professional and women entrepreneurs for their philanthropic endeavors during the school year. In addition, Facebook has connected me with businesswomen in Canada and England this year.

The final way is using video communication. While social media has exploded over the past 10 years, video communication has more people engaged, especially with the technology called WebRTC. It allows you to use video communication in real-time. You do not have to download any apps, just send a link and you are connected immediately. Another platform that I like is Talk Fusion. With their video chat products/services, you can connect and chat. This technology is being used in over 140 countries.

Whether you are talking on mobile devices with international calling access, communicating on social media via popular sites such as LinkedIn or Facebook, or connecting with people around the world via webRTC, leveraging your business is critical to growing globally today.
